A Summer Reading List
I texted Dane from the bookstore the other day: I thought I was just browsing but I’m picking up another book. I kind of have to. I can’t just leave it here in the store all alone!
(I am one step away from being the lady who brings home stray cats every other Tuesday. So far I’m just bringing home all the books.)
Here’s what I’ve been reading and loving lately, and what’s up next.

Wolfpack
Here’s what I want you to know about Abby Wambach’s new book: Old rules will not make a new world. And if you’ve been looking around this old world thinking, there must be a better way, there MUST—you were right. This is it. This is the new rule book.
Because right now, what I want is for us to build new ways together, and the old rules will not get us there. New things come when you step off the old path and out into the unknown. Every good thing comes from saying: thank you, but we can imagine a better way. We can do better. We can be what the old rules never predicted.
New rules, loves. NEW RULES.
Inheritance
This is Dani Shapiro’s story of discovering that she herself held a family secret, and then unraveling the mystery of who knew what when.
(Have I recommended this one a thousand times already? Maybe—I preordered it, read it as soon as it arrived, and have dipped back into it again and again—it’s a deep meditation on the nature of secrets and the meaning of family.)
If the idea of family secrets intrigues you, check out the Family Secrets podcast, too. This episode had me in tears.
Do Less
Egg wisdom. Did you know about egg wisdom? This one is FASCINATING.
Kate Northrup is one of my favorite follows on Instagram lately, too—I love seeing how she incorporates kids + work, and she always makes me think.
Daisy Jones & The Six
Imagine a long-form interview—with members of a fictional sixties rock and roll band. Now imagine that interview prioritizes the perspectives of the women in and around the band. So good.
This podcast interview with the author made it even better.
On Being Human
I’ve just started this one! I’ve been following the author on Instagram (she’s @jenpastiloff) for ages, and I’m looking forward to reading her thoughts in a longer form than a caption allows.
On My TBR List
To Be Read! These are patiently waiting to be cracked open and devoured.
And to Preorder…
My new book, coming this fall!
Permission Granted
What’s this book about, you ask? This Permission Granted: Be Who You Were Made to Be and Let Go of the Rest? I can answer that one!
From the publisher’s description:
“Melissa Camara Wilkins invites you into her journey of discovering the profound simplicity of dropping the pretenses and allowing ourselves to be fully human – flaws and all. This is a story about making life simpler by letting go of who you think you’re supposed to be and becoming who you really are.”
You can read more about it here, too.
