This week was supposed to be a travel week for me.
I was supposed to be speaking at a conference in Los Angeles. I was going to speak, and I was going to hang out with friends who were attending the conference with me, and I was going to meet up with readers and sign books. That was the plan, once upon a time.
Instead I am… not doing any of those things.
And honestly, I’m bummed.
Yes, there are plenty of harder things in the world right now than “not getting to do one of the extra-fun parts of my job” but life is not a comparison game. This is a bummer for me, and I’m allowed to be bummed.
But I ALSO want to be intentional about which questions I’m asking my brain to answer right now.
Because our brains are AMAZING, and they will try to answer whatever questions we ask. (They really will—try it.)
So I could ask my brain a question like: What sucks about this? What am I missing out on right now? What do I wish was different?
And my brain will come up with answers to those questions, for sure. It won’t even be hard. Those are the questions we ask without even realizing we’re asking them.
But I think the better questions for me right now are ones that help me see the power I still have—the power to make (some) choices, the power to decide how I show up, the power to be present and to take steps into the future we have instead of into the one we thought was coming.
For me, the most empowering question right now isn’t: WHAT AM I MISSING?
The more empowering question is: WHAT AM I GOING TO DO INSTEAD?
I can’t hang out with anyone in person this week, but you know what I can do? I can find ANOTHER way to meet up and talk about all the things and answer questions, without ever leaving my house.
I can schedule a virtual meetup! And that’s what I’m going to do.
