I messaged my husband the other day: “Shockingly, all the chocolate in the house is ALMOST GONE.”
He replied: “That IS shocking! How did it last so long?”
As the week is wrapping up, may you give yourself grace today. May you look at your own dwindling supply of chocolate and say: well, it wasn’t meant to last forever ANYWAY.
May you look at all the dishes still undone, the shoes untied, the laundry unwashed, the beds unmade, the books unread, the counters uncleared — and then may you look in the other direction. May you bounce your eyes right off of all that and say: ah, yes, but look at what I HAVE DONE.
I have breathed deeply, thought hard, answered often, kissed much, held tightly. I have let someone know she was heard. I have helped someone feel that he was seen. I have been present, and — okay, okay — also absent, but then I noticed and was present again. (I can travel a whole lot, without ever moving my feet.)
I have had small victories and made silly mistakes, sometimes both at once. I have made some good choices and some lousy ones, and I have NOTICED so that next time I might choose differently.
There is a time and a season for everything, but not time for everything in the same season. Not every good thing will fit in one day. Some extra things can wait, and some needful things can slip, and even so, everything will turn out just fine.
May you remind yourself.
May you find grace, may it overflow from you, may you share it with the people within your reach. Grace for YOU and for YOU and for YOU! (It’s even better than a free car.) (If you squint a little.)
And if you can’t find that grace for yourself today, may someone else offer it to you. But if you can — be that someone. Be the one who has so much grace for herself that she has plenty to give away today.
