Sometimes things don’t go according to plan.
Okay — most of the time, things don’t go according to plan.
(Or maybe they ARE going according to plan, just not according to MY plan.)
When the nap is too early, or too late, or too short, or doesn’t come at all. When the dishwasher won’t wash or the washing machine won’t launder. When there’s traffic you didn’t see coming, when there’s a line out the door, when the shop closed early.
When you find yourself starting to get irritated at these deviations from your PERFECTLY GOOD PLAN FOR THE DAY — may you notice how your expectations aren’t being met. May you have compassion for yourself, and for anyone else in the vicinity (cough, non-nappers, cough).
May you remember that your plan is not the only plan, and that it’s at least theoretically possible that this actually-happening plan is not worse than the plan you had in mind. Just different.
Maybe try to find one thing, just one little tiny bitsy thing, to be thankful for about this not-according-to-plan-ness. (An early bedtime? Not having to fold laundry? A chance to contemplate the nature of the universe while waiting in the longest line you have ever seen?)
And then: May you have a chance to brew and sip a cup (pot) of tea, if that would soothe you. May you remember to breathe deep, slow breaths.
And may there be a whole lot of napping tomorrow.
