If you have a chance to be a little bit ridiculous today, I hope you’ll take it. I hope you’ll just grab on to that umbrella and LEAP.
Whether you’re in a season of endings or a season of beginnings, whether you’re gearing up, winding down, or holding steady through the daily routine, I hope you’ll find time to let go of the serious and just have fun. Make someone smile.
Be a goofball.
I know you have other things to do, and silliness doesn’t sound super important — until you think about silliness as a kind of vulnerability. That’s what it is, really. It’s a way of showing your true self and the absurd connections your brain makes. It’s a way of saying, I know who I am, and maybe I’m a little bit weird. I’m cool with that.
Or a way of saying, I don’t have it all together, I’m not really in control of this planet or this life, but that’s okay. I’m okay. You’re okay. It’s all okay.
Or even, I trust you with my whole self, even the parts of me that aren’t calm, cool, and collected.
And anyway, there’s friendship glue in giggling, in the way that laughing together cleanses the air.
There’s good stuff on the other side of that goofiness.
(It can also be a way of hiding, of masking your vulnerabilities, especially if it’s all-silliness-all-the-time. But that’s not what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about seasoning your life with a little sprinkle of ridiculous, because it makes you happy, and it makes your people happy, and you don’t much mind what anybody else thinks about that.)
BE YOUR SILLY SELF TODAY. I’m shouting because IT’S IMPORTANT AND ALSO JUST FUN TO TYPE IN CAPITALS.
You can do this! Even if you do not have a flying umbrella.
And if you DO accidentally fly away with your umbrella, you know what? That will be a small price to pay. It’s probably even cheaper than hang-gliding lessons.
Dear Ridiculousness,
We are coming for you.
Love,
All of us.
The end.
