A gift the whole family can enjoy
Giving a gift the whole family can enjoy makes things simpler, can be more affordable, and keeps us all from being overrun with stuff each holiday.

Subscriptions to kids’ magazines and other fun reads might not sound like a gift for the whole family, but:
1. More than one kid can enjoy the same subscription; and
2. When something exciting comes in the mail, parents can count on some quiet kid time — and they don’t have to plan, prepare, shop, or drive to get it. This is a win for everyone.
We could go for the whole Cricket family of magazines. There are literary magazines for all ages (baby through teen), science magazines for school-aged kids and up, and history and culture magazines for older kids. Lots to read, often an activity or two, and zero ads. Yes!
Imaginary pen pals
I am intrigued by Mariposa Forest—a subscription brings a series of letters to your child (or children) from forest pen pals. A little bit of fantasy, a little bit of ecology, twice a month in the mailbox. My kids would love this.
Digital magazines for kids
While not quite the same as a mailed subscription, digital magazine downloads can provide that same quiet-fun-time too. For kid crafts and activities, we like Alphabet Glue. If you haven’t yet explored Action Pack, there are great back issues available.
DIY book subscription
Or create your own “subscription” service: mail the family a new book each season, so they always have something new to read aloud. They’ll be reminded of your excellent literary taste throughout the year. How many gifts can promise that?
