what will wait

June 2, 2011

I have this quote hanging on the wall in our bathroom: The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won’t wait while you finish the work.

rainbow print

There it is! Poorly lit, but still.

I found it online, uh, somewhere or other, and it seemed like a good thing to remind oneself of.

Except.

Um.

The more I read it, the more I think it’s just not true.

For one thing, for me? Most of the time? The child is the work. And most of the time? The work really won’t wait. (Diaper changes? Not wise to put off. Nursing? Happens right away, whenever it needs to. Problem solving? If it waits, things won’t be pretty.) And usually the rainbow will wait one minute while I help someone put on their socks or whatever. So. That one’s coming down off the wall.

I have decided I want to replace it with this. That one is wisdom I think I can live with.

I love this. It makes me feel better about barely having time to shower- let alone actually do anything with my hair!!

See, that’s the kind of wisdom I want to be reminded of regularly. ;)

LOL~I’m reading and thinking, maybe I should hang that saying up for myself…and then I read on.
And thought, yeah, she’s right…maybe not. :)

It totally appealed to me when I first read it! And then… not so much. :)

Combing hair is overrated.

Embrace Messy Hair. I just might have to buy that one myself. (as well as it’s partner, “eat more cheese”)

Both are wise and prudent bits of advice, methinks.

As for that rainbow? Um, yeah. I’m with you. Too much pressure in that saying to execute ritually. I say “be gone!”

It does feel kind of admonishment-y, doesn’t it? Gone it shall be.

If you’re going to embrace messy hair, you’ll have more time for eating cheese, so you might as well go for both.

How about a sign that says “Embrace messy __________.” (Suffice it to say, it’s not just the hair that’s messy ’round these parts.)

Or just “Embrace Messy.” Feels philosophical and wise, doesn’t it?

This is GENIUS!! I want to embrace messy hair! Mine AND my child’s (because Caleb often leaves the house in the morning with that “yes I went to bed with my hair wet” fan on the side of his head). And while I’m at it, I want to embrace my messy house, messy garage, messy classroom… This could be very dangerous.

Oh yes, embracing mine AND my kids. Though I wish mine would sometimes look cool-messy and not just frizzy. (Embrace! Embrace! Okay it can be frizzy.)

Embracing messy could leave us with enough breathing room to sneak out and look at those rainbows!!

Together we can be a cadre of crazy-eyed, wild-haired cheese-bearers. I like it.
